The Google Android and the Apple iOS are clearly the two rising superpowers of the mobile world. Although until this week, I had never realised that the Android was such a key player in this equation. I don’t know about you, but at least 75% of my friends seem to own an Apple iPhone and not one of them owns an Android operated device. Because of this I found the below chart bizarre as it confirms that the Android is more popular than the Apple iOS with Android dominating over of 40% the US market share.

The below infographic highlights a few key areas in which the two operating systems differentiate including memory size, number of applications and data migration. Regardless of the flaws, I am a passionate Apple supporter, although I often wonder how much of this is to do with my personal choice or influence from Apples sophisticated marketing strategies. I believe that Apple has found a way to tap into consumer desire in a way that has is yet to be achieved by Google and unless Google can find a way to capture this desire Apple will always be winning in my eyes.

I also found it surprising that, “the Android is gaining market share in America at a faster pace than the iPhone” (Raphael, 2010) as most people I know own an iPhone. It seems almost bizarre if you own something else! Perhaps it has something to do with geography, as both my research and your graph are American statistics?? Nevertheless, despite what the data tells us, I feel Apples sleek product design, is unbeatable.
ReplyDeleteIt's so strange that Australia is the only country with a higher rate of iPhones! Perhaps this is due to Apple's marketing strategies really hitting home to Australians? Or maybe it's just a keeping up with the Jones' thing - if all of your friends have an iphone, you need to have one too, and this may be feeding the iphone surplus within Australia. I agree with Gabby and you, in that the design of apple products really appeal to me, and this is a factor in my purchase of them.
ReplyDeleteI too had not realized that Android was such a success and key player in the mobile world. I surely did not realise its popularity over IPhones. I could not understand this as all around me people have IPhones. I know that previously IPhone had a larger market share in Australia but over the past few months Android has taken over once again. I have never used a Android phone before so I don’t know its benefits and advantage over the IPhone but it must be amazing if it beats the IPhone. I love my IPhone.
ReplyDeleteLike you any the other commentors I too didn't know android had such a large following, however I still love my Apple products too much to convert, everything is so nice and shiny... But I can understand why they are more popular, their price and open system seems to be a pretty good selling point, very informative post nonetheless, good work Corryn.
ReplyDeleteIt seems as though this conversation is dominated by avid apple supporters.
ReplyDeleteThis may be representative of Australia's market share. It seems everyone possesses an iPhone these days. I'm sure there may be a few loyal Microsoft or Google supporters hating on this conversation, but they have to agree they're everywhere!!!
I think it's the wide adoption of the iPhone in Australia, which is hindering consumer's selection of another mobile carrier.
